ABOUT VICTOR HUGO ZAYAS
Victor Hugo Zayas’ painting and sculpture share a physical impact, with the movement of artist and subject intertwined in a dance of line and deep pigmented color. Zayas grew up in the West Coast city of Mazatlán coming to live in San Diego as a high school student, continuing on to receive his BFA there at United States International University and then on to Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.
Writer Dave Barton of the OC Weekly once wrote, “Zayas’ representations are alive, liquid, and rushing. He doesn’t delicately apply his color so much as lather it on with a paint knife; the ridges and thick lines are a lush, churning carpet of impasto. Zayas is an artist who embraces the chaotic, letting his unruly talent take him wherever it leads while embracing a variety of inspirations both on the ground and in the heavens—his captivating sculptures reveal aspects of the man behind the artist better than any painting could.”
The last 30 years have seen his work grow at an insistent pace, with dozens of exhibitions in galleries up and down the West Coast as well as in prestigious museums such as the MOLAA (Long Beach, CA), Latino Art Museum (Claremont, CA), the Contemporary Museum of Art (Mexico City, Mexico), Laguna Art Museum and the Orange County Museum of Art (Newport Beach, CA). His work forms a part of important corporate and private collections from Washington DC to Sydney to Hong Kong.
