ARTISTS STATEMENT ABOUT THIS PIECE

A while ago I read a text by Félix González Torres in which he says that he and his partner visited a museum in Los Angeles and saw a work by Roni Horn that they thought was wonderful. Horn's piece was a large sheet of gold that was placed on the floor of the room. They were so impressed by that work that he later wrote a text in which he reflected on the economy in the United States, but also made a more personal and intimate reflection related to that piece of gold. To him and his partner, both sick with AIDS and already knowing that they were going to die soon, it seems that this gold was like the many golden sunsets they saw together.
When I read this I was very moved and thought it was obvious that they also thought about all the sunsets they were not going to be able to see. Félix had left many years ago and how could I tell him how moved I was by what he wrote?

So I thought that if art is spiritual, then this Polaroid piece was my conversation with him. Photography captures a moment in time that is unique and a Polaroid is also a unique photo that is revealed to us. The title of the Polaroid is “Sunrise.” Because in some way it was something new, with hope.
