ABOUT THE WORK

Created as part of the Marjorie and Joseph Rubenson Endowment for Art and Science at Volcan Mountain.

Cows and Wild Turkeys find shelter in the shade of a Coast Live Oak. Nearby is a bedrock mortar, a stone with holes worn down by Kumeyaay people to process oak acorns after drying. Coast Live Oaks are ecological keystones, supporting many species of life, and the Kumeyaay might stop under a coast live oak during seasonal travel. The bark, branches, and stems would be used medicinally, and to create the dye, toys, and construction materials.
