ABOUT MARCUS WHITE

Marcus White (1915 - 2009) was a multifaceted artist and sculptor living and working in Torrance, California. The free-spirited creativity of jazz, which he performed as a musician in his early years, deeply influenced his interest in abstraction and working intuitively.

He studied bronze casting and welding with the magnetic Mildred Walker in the late 1940s when she established the studio art department at Torrance's El Camino College. At the same time, he developed his visual vocabulary by looking at images of works of art in books and by seeing art in person.

In the '50s, after seeing the work of Harold Gebhardt at what later became the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and realizing he taught at the Los Angeles County Art Institute (the forerunner of the Otis Art Institute), he enrolled to study with him. White was awarded the award for sculpture in a 1959 exhibition at the LACMA forerunner.

These masterpieces were discovered after Marcus White's passing and make up a collection that transcends value in the importance they hold to the history and understanding of midcentury sculpture and organic modernism.
