ABOUT THIS WORK

The myth of the Minotaur was a favorite of Pablo Picasso and the inspiration behind this piece by Mexico City-based artist Eugenia Martinez. The half-man, half-bull monster that lived in a labyrinth and devoured sacrificial maidens is fashioned from a dashing portrait of a young Pablo Picasso, his face obscured by a midcentury woven bull mask. Eugenia writes in patterns reminiscent of dizzying confusion, straight onto the glass, "Son solo alfileres" or "They're only pins" suggesting that the maze of masculinity is an illusion.

The work is set in an oversized custom shadowbox that is designed to stand, giving the image tremendous presence, as if Picasso himself is in the room.
