ABOUT ALEXANDRE ARRECHEA
Arrechea received a BFA, from Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in 1994 (Havana, Cuba. He has had individual exhibitions at institutions such as Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (MNBA) in Havana, Cuba, PS1 Contemporary Art Center in New York, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) in Los Angeles, and the New Museum in New York, among many others. His work can be found at collections such as Museo Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Reina Sofia, Spain; Museum of Modern Art, NY, USA; Brooklyn Museum, NY, USA; Mudam, Luxemburg. ARTIST STATEMENT ON THIS PIECE
This piece is part of a series I developed between 2009 and 2011. During the Venice Biennale, presented as part of the Cuban Pavilion, I showcased "The City That Stopped Dancing," which reflected on Havana’s struggle with failure and the potential for renewal. The spinning top series reached its peak with the Park Avenue installation, where two large-scale spinning tops were placed for viewers to turn at will, symbolizing the idea that while things may falter, it’s up to us to make them function again
